Is there a sp or way (other than profiler) that would be able to let you know when a sql job takes too long (a specified duration). In this case I am trying to monitor a specific job, so I would have the job_id.

easiest way is to have a initial job dummy step then you can look in sysjobhistory to see if it's still running.
Otherwise you can use sp_helpjob to view executing jobs.

Cursors are useful if you don't know sql.
DTS can be used in a similar way.
