I have a 17" Trinitron monitor that came with my Dell three years ago. I just built a new PC and have yet to upgrade my monitor. I use a resolution of 1600 x 1200 on my new PC and am wondering why it seems that the majority of the monitors I have read about have max resolutions below this? Does the video card play any role in the max resolution, or is it just the monitor? If so I can't understand why a monitor I got four years ago is capable of resolutions higher than the majority of today's monitors.

Monitors less than 3-4 years old should easily be able to support 1600 x 1200 resolutions. The main dependency is on the video card and its drivers. If the video card has the capability, then make sure you have the right adapter drivers installed for it. By default, Windows will assign a generic adapter that is normally limited to 1024 x 768.

In windows 95/98, right-click the desktop and go to properties. Go to the Settings tab and click advanced. You should have an adapter tab and be able to reinstall the appropriate driver for your video card here.
