I am using an Akai high def TV that has VGA input. I remember the first time I plugged my laptop into it with Windows 7, and how I was so happy that its native resolution of 1366x768 showed up. Since then, it's been a while and I've done a lot of stuff to this laptop. Last night, I plugged it in, and it went to 1280x768. That was the highest resolution available. When I picked List All Modes, I got 1280x720, then 1920x1080, and nothing in between. If I List All Modes for the laptop, 1366x768 is right there in the middle, along with 1280x768 and others that will not show up for the second monitor. I've reinstalled the drivers several times, started in safe mode, deleted all monitors, etc., and I can not get it to work. At one point, I set it to 1024x768, and now even the 1280x768 choice is gone.

Anybody have some new ideas? I tried poking around in the registry. Didn't make things worse that I know of, but I didn't fix it either.

Thanks!

In Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Display\Screen Resolution\ Advanced Settings\ Monitor, is there a tick in the checkbox for "Hide modes that this monitor cannot display"?

I already did that. That's how I got choices higher than 1024x768.

The resolution is controlled by the INF file for the MONITOR...

Meaning that Windows is listing the Monitor/TV as a Standard Monitor instead of a TV SET, you need to tell the secondary screen that you are using a flat panel TV and the resolution should pop up for you to set it to...

I feel like a dummy sometimes. I can not figure out how to tell this thing that I have a flat panel TV. I've looked all over, and can't find anything. If my ATI Catalyst software doesn't have the option, and Windows doesn't either, can I edit the monitor.inf file and reinstall? This should be really easy! It just did it the first time, dag nabbit!

two ways:

1. Go to the device manager, there under MONITORS, select the one that is your TV.

Right click and select UPDATE DRIVER. A new Window opens, choose BROWSE MY COMPUTER FOR DRIVER SOFTWARE. Then select Ler me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer, next window untick Show comptible hardware, now a whole gamut of integrated drivers should appear. on the left side choose (Standard monitor types), then on the right side choose Digital Flat Panel (1360x768, 60hz). click OK and that should be it...

2. ATI Control Center 10.8 latest version.

open up CCC, top left TAB (Graphics), drop down menu item there should be a box called Force TV Detect tick that. Confirm with OK, and leave CCC.

now go to the TASKBAR, lower right, where the ATI icon is. Right click that ICON, then hover the mouse pointer over display 1 or 2 (which ever is the TV), then hover the mouse pointer over Set Desktop area to then Basic and then choose the resolution.

the above is assuming that you have one of the later ATI Radeons, HD 3xxx, HD 4xxx or HD 5xxx...

Let us know how it goes...

CCC was a little different. Had to pick Desktop and Displays, Configure, and 1366x768 showed up. Windoze still insisted it was 1280x768. Went back to Catalyst after breaking my monitors apart again (It switched to duplicate desktops) and pushed the 1366x768 a second time. That time, it took.

I should have known about the first part. I've done that sort of thing before. I think my brain tried to tell me, but I was distracted by a chicken or something. Damn that ADHD! :))

Thanks! I think I may have figured it out on my own, given another day to work on it.

Had to pick Desktop and Displays,
ooops, that was my mistake... I left out that, I guess my brain addled there as well...

but I'm glad to hear that you found it and that the problem seems to be solved... and thank you for posting back telling us so...
