Monitor reinstalls with each boot

Upon borrowing a monitor to replace my burned out unit, I had problems getting the driver to "stick". Each time I booted up -- the OS would "find" new hardware and install it. The problem was, it was installing the default driver -- one with poor attributes. I could go into Device Manager, and remove it - leaving the good driver in place, and then the monitor worked fine -- that is until I again started the machine. Now, I have a brand new monitor, complete with a disk for installation. However, the exact annoying condition remains: It "found" new hardward (again and again) and reinstalled the default driver. Not good.

Any ideas as to how to fix this once and for all? I'm thinking about reloading the OS - but would really like to know just what is causing the problem.

Respectfully,

Gary

Take the video to 640x480 and the monitor to standard vga and shutdown.
When it finds the display, install it and when it finds the monitor tell it to use the disk.
This should let it sort things out. Ed Fair
