Can anyone tell me why when I power down my system the light on the monitor changes from green to orange but wont turn off - I have recently upgraded my system - the previous one only had an AT power supply so I had to press the power switch to turn off the system - the light on the monitor used to turn off with this system - I the power lead for the monitor is running directly from thee powersupply on the back of the pc - any help greatly appreciated

With the AT system I bet your monitor's power cord was connected into your case's power supply - hence, power supply shuts off, monitor shuts off.

Now with no ATX power supplies that function like that, your monitor is now plugged into a power outlet - hence it will always have power, and when you see the orange light, that signifies it is receiving no signal input, and is in power saving mode.

Dakota81 - thanks for your response however the power lead for the monitor runs directly from the power supply on the back of the PC not from a wall socket - so one would think that when the power is turned off to the machine the whole lot goes off but this is not the case with my system and I'm not sure where to start looking to change this - any help much appreciated

uh the new power supply assums that you may want to turn on your monitor without your pc on.. maybee you use a switch box your powersupply doesnt know. either way big deal the only electricity being used is for a lil yellow light js error; 67 on line; 36 of signature.class

Can't you push the power off button on the monitor? Mine goes amber when I shut down and after about 5 minutes the light goes off on it on. (Power save mode) "A little knowledge is a dangerous thing....." [morning]

That's what I get for not reading the whole question...

The AT power supplies were all designed to turn off the monitor plug when the power supply was shut off.

I actually have never seen yet an ATX power supply that has a monitor connection in it, but if you have one, then they exist, though not common. It's obvious that your monitor is still getting normal power, so the way that power supply is designed, it just allows full power at all times going to the monitor. Solution: Push that button (or flip that switch) on your monitor to turn it off.

Thanks for the responses however I am still at the same point that I was at before - If any one knows of a way to shut off the power to the monitor without physically turning it off please let me know - I will just have to precivere for the meantime - Its not a huge problem but it would be nice if it all shutdown together

Cheers

The orange light means its off. Its because your using an ATX supply now.

The problem is that the power supply in your PC is still receiving power from the wall outlet. The socket on the back of the pc is configured to stay on, even when the pc is turned off. You would either have to find a physical switch that changes its function, or sift through the BIOS and see if a such a setting exists.

Otherwise, your only option will be to turn it off manually. It shouldn't be so hard to connect everything to a surge protector and just flip one switch to turn everything off...

you could put a piece of tape over the light if it's keeping you awake at night. "A little knowledge is a dangerous thing....." [morning]

:) Nice one nobrain, my kind of solution.
On the other hand, the ATX power supply always has power running through it. Else your PC would never turn on! The power switch only gets as far as your mobo so the PSU supplies power to monitor the state of the switch. The monitor pass-through is 'dumb' and draws directly off the mains input before any of the ATX funkyness. Getting to the point, your monitor will always be powered up (but in standby) if the PC is plugged in. In technical speak, it's designed to do it.
