Monitor flicker problems

I just purchased a new monitor. It seemed to work fine at first (or I didn't notice the problem at first), but now the screen's brightness is flickering between bright and normal, and the picture grows and shrinks a little bit randomly. Also there are barely noticeable, thin lines about an inch apart starting at the bottom and going up the screen (they're at a slight angle). I tried pressing the degauss button to try to fix the problem. I have powered down and up several times. I have moved my speakers and any magnetic influence away from the monitor. I changed the refresh rates and tried every possible resolution and rate. The problem wasn't present the first day I got the montior. It seems to be getting worse. It's a Cornerstone Color 50/101sf with a Nvidia GeForce FX 5200 powering it.

The best refresh rate is around the 75Hz level. Most recent CRTs should be able to use that rate at the most common resolutions (assuming you are using a CRT).
In any case, if you are not touching the controls, there is no reason for a monitor to change brightness.
I would bring the monitor back and have it replaced.

Pascal.

Thank you for the reply. Yes, I have tried the 75Hz refresh rate but it still looks the same. It is a CRT, and I can't return it. The year it was manufactured was 1998, but it's never had this problem before. It's a 21-inch monitor, so maybe it has power supply issues if the picture is pulsing larger and smaller. I wonder what caused the problem, because it wasn't here when I first got it.
