I want to get away from Explorer as my browser. Are these the two best ones or are there others ones that are better?
I am running ME on a Toshiba Satelite laptop using dialup connection, if that is of any consequence.
Is this the correct forum to post this question?

Its like asking what is the best religion.

Firefox is an impressive effort, but don't throw out your Internet Explorer. There is a new version of Netscape soon, and AOL browser soon based on IE with tabbed browsing that is not AOL site dependent, Google has left various hints that it is doing its own rewrite of Firefox, and there are several handfuls of others currently shipping.

For secure sites you probably will have to use IE; for general browsing you have lots of choices.

So Internet Explorer is the only browser if a secure site is needed?
Maybe the way to go is load my extra laptop with Linux and use Firefox to further avoid problems?

Da-vi'do

I did not say the only browser for secure sites. Firefox can support them. The "probably" above is because most will require IE. It is not the browser's fault but that of the web page designers.

Personally I use Mozilla. It is the only browser which displays every page in my favourites list without problems(including secure sites, e.g. PayPal/banking). Opera seems to have a lot of problems displaying sites correctly.

As I understand it, Firefox is identical to Mozilla, but without the news/email/composer/chat elements (i.e. just a browser).

I'd like to throw in my chip for Mozilla as well. It has every security feature you'd like to have in the box, no additional stuff needed. And tabbed browsing is really fun (I understand that IE has it now, or will have soon - so that should no longer be a plus for Mozilla).
Mozilla warns me when a site tries forcing a download without my permission (what kind of idiot make THAT possible in HTML ??). It allows me to block popups selectively. It allows me to manage my cookies correctly. And, most importantly, it is not subject to all those ActiveX hacks and holes.
Mozilla also allows me to decide if and when I want to see all those annoying Flash animations.
And, when I finally decided that I wanted to do something about those Ad pages that display on web sites, I easily found a plugin for Mozilla that allows me to selectively manage which sites I wish to allow viewing, and which ones I want to ban. Generic * is allowed in the definitions too.

In other words, Mozilla gave me exactly the web surfing experience I wanted. Of course, to do my online banking, I thought I had to use IE, but actually I can use Mozilla too.

So I have only one reason to use IE : when I go to FilePlanet and want to download something.

I can live with that.

Pascal.

Mozilla is the way to go , it displays almost all pages correctly and is fast . Have been using it along with Netscape 7.2 which is based on Mozilla . The tabbed browsing is great . Even use Mozilla here at work which is a big multinational company . They ahave it as the alternate browser on their company download site ( Big Blue :) . So you know it has to be fairly stable if a big company like this will use it .
