I've downloaded kernel 2.6.6 and compiled everything as normal on my RH9 box. I've also updated the module utilities module-init-tools-3.0. However, booting into this new kernel, none of the modules will load automatically. lsmod after booting shows nothing loaded. I have to do insmod for all the devices that i need.

To get networking up, I have to do modprobe 3c59x. This already indicates that the module is not loaded. Any module loaded automatically or other wise should be displayed when doing a lsmod.

man update-modules?

Can't seem to be able to find update-modules as a man page or as an executable.

Loading all the required modules manually every boot-up is a real drag.

Hi zeland,

If you obtain a copy of Fedora Core 2, you could try an update of you RH 9 install. When Fedora Core 2 is boot off the install CD, you can choose to update or do a fresh install. There is no guanantee that it will fix your problem, but it might be worth a try.

I'm trying to avoid an upgrade to FC2. I've tried installing FC2 on another desktop machine with the same specs* as mine and the performance was really sluggish. I didn't really like Gnome 2.6 with the way it opens multiple nautilus windows as you browse for files. Also, FC2 installation took up nearly 3GB of my HDD.

Specs*
- Pentium-MMX 200MHz
- 128 MB RAM
- 4GB HDD
