Hi all,

I'm just getting acclimated to Linux, so bare with me if this is an elementary problem. I currently have a Red Hat 7.1 box (purchased pre-configured from Compaq) that is dumping the same error message in the /var/log/messages file, does anyone know what process this is and how to fix it? Log message:

Nov 6 08:37:37 localhost modprobe: Note: /etc/modules.conf is more recent than /lib/modules/2.2.16-22/modules.dep
Nov 6 08:37:37 localhost modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module block-major-65

Hi,

Well for the first you'd just do a 'depmod -a' command as root. However, that command should be done as part of the boot process so seems a bit odd if it recurs.

On the other error, there must be an entry in /etc/modules.conf that refers to a non-existant module for some reason. block major 65 would indicate a scsi device (16 -31). There must be an error on the related 'alias' entry within modules.conf .

Regards

Here is my /etc/modules I don't see any reference to a SCSI alias, any ideas?

[root@web5 /etc]# more modules.conf
alias eth0 e100
alias eth1 e100
options e100 RxDescriptors=1024,1024
add options e100 TxDescriptors=1024,1024
alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc
alias usb-controller usb-ohci
