I am a little confused about master pages. Suppose I have twenty individual documents, each using the same master page design. Now suppose I want to change the (say) font size that appears on the master page. What is the easiest way to get the change reflected in all documents? Or do I have to manually change each one? Naturally, I would like to make one change and see it effected immediately in all documents, but I don't know if that is possible.

Create a book, Search the help files for this option.
Once you have the book ready with all your documents in it the page numbers will adjust accordinlly.

To do what you want you have to have the type you want adjusted as a charater style, or paragrph style, and it will sync then all.

I don't think it does it with boxes etc

Yes, I see how that works with fonts. But suppose I wanted to move a rule down an eighth of an inch on every page. Do I have to open each individual doc and modify its master page? Can I create one master page that applies to all documents within a book?

No, I can't find anywhere that will do that.

I guess what you are after is a sort of Book template where you place all you common elements. which will then apply to all the document in the book.

That would be very handy, but alas, doesn't exist.
