Hi all,

We have a spreadsheet that is on a NT server on a shared drive. It is read only for most users, but password protected to modify. However frequently when it comes to modifying a message that a certain user has the file open appeaers. When the person allegedly with the file open has been found to either:
not know the password
not have file open
not logged on
not at work

Also on Server Manager there is no instance shown of the above user having the file open. I'm not sure this is an operating system problem or a software bug (though we have had similar systems on UNIX server previously).

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

What Service Pack are you running on your workstations and server? -----------------------------------------------------

fwiw...I see this too (esp. if Excel crashes) with Excel 2000 running on Windows 2000 and the Excel file on a W2K server. All the latest service packs installed. I don't know if it is Excel or the OS at fault but I haven't seen any fix. (Sorry - not a very useful post!)
