Modify Sprite Lightness/Brightness

I'm working on a Director project and I'm wondering if there's some kind of syntax that can be used for sprites/cast members that works like blend but for the lightness/brightness of a sprite. In context: I want to vary the lightness of an image according to a variable so it will appear darker or lighter than the original image - much like using blend changes the image's opacity.
 
I can think of 3 ways:

1. Get an Xtra, such as AlphaMania.
2. Use imaging lingo.
3. Imitate it.

To imitate, place an identically shaped black/white (depending on darken/lighten operation) graphic behind the target image and adjust the blend/ink. I think this should work, don't you?!
