Modify Exported RTF or Word file

I have reports that when exported using RTF or Word format are difficult if not impossible to modifiy. The text format is OK, but it is contained in fields, so adding additional text is very difficult to do if it runs into the next "field". Is there a way to export that will leave the formatting but not put text into fields? I am using CR 8.5
