Hi,
I am a 77 year-old fully retired Foxpro user who was put out to pasture 10 years ago. It has been more than a few years since I last used Foxpro and I am during a project as a volunteer for an organization.

Tamor Granor was a major source of my knowledge since I became fairly adept at using Foxpro even though I had no college computer courses. One of my programs contained 10,000 lines of code! Sadly, my computer library was destroyed in a flood and my memory of old familiar commands is lacking. (Lots of facts about life have also been forgotten.)

My specific problem is that I am unable to execute "modi form x" where x is the filename. When I try to run it after an error message, I get "File is in use." How to I close the file and then open it to exam the code? I feel so dumb...

Welcome back to the fox.

Most probably you just run the form. You can't modify it, while it runs. Simply close it. If you don't see it, it may run as top level form on the desktop, or run invisible, not yet shown. But if all else fails, just restart foxpro and you will be able to modify it.

Bye, Olaf.

Hi OldTimerDon,

Olaf has given you the advice you need. So I'll just add my welcome to the forum, and for your return to FoxPro. Tamar is one of the regulars here, by the way.

Do be sure to stop by again whenever you run into difficulties.

Mike

Why am I getting an icon on the desktop instead of the form? When I click and select "restore, " it displays my form.

Did I inadvertently change a setting someplace?

Amazing how much I have lost over the years. Part of it has been Foxpro enhancements, part of it is "losing it by not using it...

Why am I getting an icon on the desktop instead of the form?

It would help us to answer this question if you could provide some more information:

1. What icon are you referring to?

2. Do you mean the Windows desktop? Or the FoxPro background window?

3. Is this connected to the problem of not being able to open the form?

Did I inadvertently change a setting someplace?

We have no way of knowing that.

If the answer to 3 is No, have you solved the problem of not being able to open the form? If Yes, were the suggestions given to you of any help?

Mike

Does the "icon" look like one of these?

Like part of the title bar of a form? And is located at the bottom of the screen? This just is a minimized form. You perhaps wanted to close the form, but have clicked the minimize button instead of the close button. Minimized forms looked this way on Win3.1 too before there was a taskbar, if you remember, which I'm sure you will. So that's not only foxpro specific, that at least was even windows specific for a minimized form.

In todays Windows a minimized form normally shows in the task bar instead of the desktop bottom, but since the FoxPro screen is a bit like it's own desktop you still get the old style minimized forms there. Start more than one form and minimze them all and they'll stack up there, like in above image.

Bye, Olaf.

Good diagnosis job, Olaf!
Yes, after clicking on "do form" several times, I got several minimized forms. When I closed all but one, I then clicked the maximize button and had a full screen.

Since my form is always starting minimized, what desktop screen setting do I have to change to always open full screen?

Many thanks to you and Mike in Scotland. Where are you?

No desktop setting. The Form property WindowState is telling, how the windows starts, normal, minimized or maximized.

As you asked, I'm from germany. I'm fortunate not to have been flooded, even though Hamburg also lies at the Elbe, one of the rivers having flooded several towns in east and south germany.

You know worse scenarios from the USA, I'm sure, not to talk about the past...

Bye, Olaf.

Thank you, Olaf! The form starts normally now.
While I had flood problems a few years ago, I have no complaints about the past. I am fortunate I have not had the problems that so many others have had with weather in the US in the past year. My grandparents were from Germany and I wish I could explore their roots. My great grandfather was born in 1853 in Coswig, Anhalt, Dejsaw, Germany. Problem is his name Charles (or Carl) Wendt is too common to trace.
Anyway, thank you so much.
Don
