modem's driver installation

my modem used to work fine before i formatted drive c:
the modem name displayed in the device manager's list was "conexant softK56,data,fax,speakerphone, pci modem"
now when i want to install the driver for this modem Windows 98 displays the message: "the software you are trying to install was not written for this hardware . installation of this software is not recommended"
