I have a win2003 server that i would like to get some incoming/outgoing faxes running and I would like to know if there are any considerations with regards to Controller based vs Contollerless modems.?

Are there any suggestions on modem types, I was thinking of connecting a few USB modems to handle this. I am not sure on the issues with up to 4 winmodems running or if an Internal Fax board is the way to go.?

Also I currently have a serial moded for DUN and I would like to know if changing to a winmodem would be an issue for speed and server processing.?

Generally I think you will have better compatability with fax standards if you use a controler based (Non-Winmodem) solution. We have been using Brooktrout Fax Bords and really like them.

Winmodems basically suck (this is from years of working for an ISP doing support). More often that not they don't work right. With the low cost of a controller based modem (we called them real modems back then) I'd stay away from the winmodems.
