i have a gateway DX200 X. is there a procedure that indicate if the modem is on or damaged?

couple things, first if using XP, going to the modem icon in control panel, is the modem listed, ? if it is listed with a com port you should be able to click on it and then choose propteries and then choose diagnostics, it might take a moment or two depending on what else is running but it should pass if it is OK otherwise you can get programs like Modem doctor to do simular things

if when initially looking in control panel, the "normal" com ports are 1 through 4, if going through the above procedure and it fails, then you may want to try removing it from device manager and re-booting and have it re-detect it, as there could be some kind of conflict which would prevent it from operating,
