I have cable modem installed (talked to att tecks and there shouldn't be anything installed to block dial-up) and am trying to: reinstalled a us robotics x2 voice data winmodem (almost impossible to find drivers and dell after 3 hours told me to go buy a new modem because they couldn't reinstall I even found the disks)
error message doesn't recognize dial tone, switched off option to wait for dial tone before dialing and stilll same error
have very long phone cord, but modems with 2 laptops recognize dial tone
should I buy a new one? thanks

Assuming that another PC 'can' detect dial tome on the modem in question, assuming that you are using the same telephone cable and jack with the non-working pC, try this:

(These instructions may vary with version of operating system - you did not stae yours)
Go to Control Panel
Open the Properties of your modem
(In XP):
Click the Diagnostics tab
Click the Query Modem button
You should get a response form the modem, if not, begin troubleshooting your modem installation.
Try deleting the modem and rebooting to see if the system properly detects it.

thanks, I am running win 98 going to control panel / modem/ diagnostics and more info i get a response from many commands ati 1 -7.

Believe it or not, we had users who had to turn down the volume on the modem to get a dial tone on the USRx2 Voice Sportster, which depleted the reason for buying it.
