Modem Trouble

I am having some difficulty with my computer. My modem doesn't want to work right. I will check the ring tone, dial, and start to connect. A soon as it gets to the longer tones it hangs on the very first one. I have done the McAfee check, Norton check, and Winsock fix. I have installed a different modem and done it all over again with the same results. Any help is greatly appriciated.

Did this modem ever work in this computer, on this telephone jack, and with this ISP? Is the "line" cord connected directly to the wall jack? (No splitters or UPS connections). It sounds like a bad line, have you had the telco check the line? I've also seen problems caused by "bad" cordless phones. Unplug all other phones in the house and try.

it could also be a bad driver
