Modem - switch - router?

Hello,
I have a network with a modem (LinkSys ADSL ME3), attached to a router (Linksys BEFSR81) granting network access to a bunch of computers.
The router is blocking access to many sites one employee needs access to. We want to leave the security as it is, but circumvent it for one user.
Is it possible to plug a switch directly into the modem, then plug the router into the switch? And have one user plugged into the switch, to go around the router?
We tried - and it worked briefly, then all the users lost connectivity - so I'm wondering if this is more involved...
Thanks for any help!

One thing I ran into not too long ago when helping a small business setup their stuff was that their ISP only allowed for one IP address to be given at any one time. I believe the company was just being cheap and not getting a more "business" package of DSL. What I mean is, they had a DSL modem the was NAT'ing to a private address. The person getting this address would have to log into a proxy setup at the ISP to register the use of this IP. After this was done, I hardcoded that IP address to the WAN side of the router and setup a completely different subnet on the LAN side of the router for multiple users to use. This worked fine for them. This might be something simular that your running into since it stopped working for the rest of the users. They might have something in place that tracks based on IP address or MAC address of the network interface.

I've done it, but with multiple addresses available so not certain of the results on a single address.

There is also an option on some routers to give open access to the internet from a specific address. Called the DMZ. But when it is open like that the machine had better be secure.
