Modem properties freeze

I have a brand new Compaq PC (with WinXP) that I had to install an external modem on to. It is a Netcomm CD2003 modem, which installs fine and can connect to the Internet OK. However, when I click on Properties in the Phone and Modem screen under Control Panel, the system freezes and I have to End Task through Task Manager.

Anyone know why that may be happening?
