modem problem

PC crashed and XP was reinstalled losing most of programs including modem driver. Have installed using standard modem driver intending to download driver but...
Internal modem not responding. Have followed all trouble shooters but no luck. When modem is queried it does not respond. What Am I doing wrong HElp

You've probably solved it by now but...

XP is finicky about drivers, you'll need to get the newest drivers from the manufacturer's website (preferably drivers with 'XP' on the end)
