We're trying to install a Hayes Accura external modem on a Compaq Prosignia 200 (Pentium MMX 166MHz), running NT4 SP6a. The serial port is enabled in the BIOS, COM1 shows up in control panel. The modem was not detected on COM1 but seemed to install OK when selected from a list. Now when we test the modem using Hyperterminal or Phone dialer, the TR light goes on, but nothing else happens, it doesn't dial the number. The modem tested OK on a Windows 98 machine. We're wondering if anyone is familiar with external modems on NT? One thing we haven't tried yet is adding another COM port in control pannel and trying to assign COM2 to the modem. We can't use a PCI internal modem because it requires a faster processor.

AFAIK, NT4 was very fussy about what port the modem is on.
If you can get Com 2 active, and actually plug the modem into it (is it on the back of that old Compaq?), it should work.
The same reinstall procedure applies though, you need to remove all "ghost" devices in device manager before trying to install it, and the modem must be turned on before the computer is started. Cheers,
Jim
