Modem or Switch problem?

I am working on a network problem.

First the stats:

We have a Zoom Model 5654 X5 Ethernet/USB ADSL 2/2+ Modem DSL modem, that is wired directly into our phone box.

We then have the modem pluged directly into the #1 port of a Netgear GS116 16 Port 1gb switch.

Right now we are using 8 of the 16 ports (we will be adding more as soon as we can get everything working and stable).

Hooked into 2 of the ports, are 2 other switches:

1) D-Link DGS 2205 – 5 Port 1 gb Switch

Hooked into this switch are 2 Client systems

2) Hawkings Technology ‘Blackhawk’ PN108ES – 8 Port 10/100 switch

Hooked into this switch are 2 HP laser Printers with JetDirect 600n Print Servers in them and assigned IP’s

The Network Map looks like this:

This network functioned correctly for a day, including the printers – we were actually quite happen with it. It still functioned correctly, but only by re-booting the router – since the internet connection was going out 4-5 times a day.

I tried an experiment, and replaced the new Zoom router with the old:

Broadmax Tech LTD. (Linkmax HSA300A-2) DSL modem - that the ISP/DSL company gave to us. Well, it works fine with the DSL and doesn’t drop the connection.

The problem with it, is that it the 2 switches that are plugged into our main switch, aren’t ‘visible’. I mean there is a connection – the Link light is lit, but no activity (the ACT light is not lit). The 2 computers on the switch do not have internet connection, and we are not able to print on the printers.

What do I need to do, to get the network to ‘see’ the 2 external switches?

This feels like deja vu, I just answered an extremely similar request on DSLReports.

I would check to see if the printers were not hard coded on to the 'wrong' subnet now that you changed routers, I would edit the routers IP address to be the subnet the printers expect. It is possible the PCs have the same problem.

I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.
