Modem on new computer running slow

The machine had XP home pre loaded, & I'm using (at the moment) a dial up connection. The machine has an internal 56kbps modem yet the download speed is only showing as 19.2 kbps.

I'm hoping that this is something that can be adjusted using XP.

Any suggestions/help greatfully received

that could be everything..

phone line.. outlet.. phone company.. other side.. your modem.. your drivers.. your settings..

I'd update your drivers and maybe try a different phone outlet if you can

If your ISP offers several access numbers, try another one.

I had same problem here, the modem was a ganeric cheap one (around 25$). I replace it with a USR and got 46200 minimum and often get more ... it paid me to pay 30$ more for a BRAND one.
