God, This is crazy - Im helping a friend to dial up for Net Zero - Everything is right except the modem is not connecting! Its on COM1 - does anyone know if this is ok? I tried COM2 also. The computer always assigns these things automatically. And I used the old original drivers on floppy from before XP was on this computer. It is a Standard 56k modem (no name) also it didnt show up on the IRQ list. whats going on? Thanks. ps My modem at home shows up on the IRQ list as 10 and COM3.

Sounds a bit suspect, is this the correct driver for XP?

Try uninstalling this driver as XP often will load a generic driver from it's data base without the need for the third party driver.

Have you any exclemation or question marks next to the modem in the device manager?

I dont think there is a question mark or exclamation mark. I also suspect the drivers - would I have to run a new software or hardware wizard to get the generic XP drivers - how do I get them? Also is the Com1 ok you think? thanks for any ideas.

com1 could be OK, but some boards, like an addon modem, may be set (sometimes with a jumper sometimes) to use an exclusive com port, could be 1, 2, 3 or 4. I haven't seen yet where an older modem driver for w95/98 doesn't work on XP, but there is always a first time.

Go into START>SETTINGS>CONTROL PANEL>MODEMS and see if the modem is listed. If it is click on the DIAGNOSTICS tab (hopefully its the same in XP) then click on the appropriate device in the list of devices that should display, then click on "more information" button. This should at least tell you if the modem is communicating with the com port correctly. If it is then it could just be a setting in net zero that needs to be corrected, although the net zero setup should automatically detect the modem.

I guess I've got to point out that there are simply dozens of potential drivers and modems can be bought for under $15, is it really worth the hassel? buy a new modem if the drivers cannot be found quickly .
