Modem not receiving data

We have a modem connected to our Nortel phone system but we can not get the login prompt. When we try to dial into the phone system using hyperterminal from a PC with a usb modem we just get the blinking cursor. The modem on the PC end see the key strokes as the TD light blinks but the RD light never comes on and we don't get the login prompt for the phone system...just the blinking cursor. Does this sound like a modem cable problem on the phone system side?

a couple thoughts,
1st is which nortel system are you connecting to, that would make a differance as to connection speed, data bits stop bits Etc,
2nd on the modem itself, if you get something like modem doctor or some other utility to confirm that the modem to talking to the PC,
3rd if there is a serial connection on the nortel system itself hooking up a laptop directly with the right data bits stop bits Etc should help
otherwise check the FAQ on the nortel section for your system
