Windows 98
External Standard Modem
ISP - Telewest (dialup)

The PC is reseting itself on boot up.

I was having problems connecting to my ISP. Disconnected everytime. Then I reinstalled the modem. The PC just keeps rebooting in a cycle.

I reinstalled windows all was fine.

Installed the modem and then the same problem occured. At best an error code of the type so and so file is missing. reinstall windows crops up. Can boot into windows if Im lucky at this stage.

Should I not install the modem as a standard modem?

I have placed the Win 98 i386 onto my HD.

you should install the modem using the correct modem driver - very few modems work well (if it all) using the 'standard modem' driver.

if you haven't got the original driver disk (and it's generally better to get the latest version anyway...) find out the make / model of the modem, then visit the manufacturer's homepage for the latest driver.

if it's a USB modem (and is powered by the USB line - i.e. has no seperate power adapter) it may help to disable power management on the USB.

<marc> i wonder what will happen if i press this...[pc][ul][li]please give feedback on what works / what doesn't[/li][li]need some help? how to get a better answer: faq581-3339[/li][/ul]

I have looked around. Looks like the problem is actually related to my AMD chip. Wrong voltage apparently....maybe overheating.

Thanks for the advice. It did seem to do the trick initially but then went back to the same error.
