Hi,

WinXP Home version, "Generic 56K HCF Data Fax Modem" from Creative Labs

When I disconnect from my ISP I get ~60 sec delay before connection is actually terminated. Computer "freezes" while waiting for modem hangup. Modem was working just fine until a few weeks ago, don't know of anything I changed that would alter settings. Connects just fine, works fine on-line, just won't disconnect like it used to. I've pasted a portion of the modem log below, hoping someone in this forum can point me to a solution. I'm NOT a computer professional, don't understand a lot of the jargon. I've reinstalled modem driver, played with a number of settings without fixing.

Can anyone explain why this worked?
I posted this problem at a Microsoft newsgroup for IE/OE and got a suggestion. John told me he had found a several month old posting describing an identical problem that was solved by turning off "modem error correction" and "modem compression". So... that's what I tried. Sure enough, when I turned off both of those settings, I'm again back in business. Disconnect happens within 5 secs instead of 60.

Am I going to have other problems crop up by turning off error correction and compression? I'm planning on creating a home network with my two computers and I'd like to share my modem/internet connection. Is that going to still work?

Hi,

I think I also saw your post on Modemhelp.net.

Are you using IE 5.5 by any chance? I ran into almost the exact same problem using the same modem after I upgraded IE to version 5.5 with 128 bit encryption.

Hiya

I already posted this today but I'm going crazy reading all the forum posts and this seems that MAYBE it applies to my problem ????

WHere can I find MODEM ERROR CONNECTION and MODEM COMPRESSION in the properties of the modem ?? .. I have looked and not found anything .. Anyway this is my problem :(

I have installed a TRUST 56K V92 USB MODEM with the correct drivers today desperately hoping to solve my problem .. but it has remained .. I wonder if anyone is able to help me.

This problem has happened for months on and off .. first with WIN98SE then even after a full format and installation of WIN XP PRO.

I use WInfax ... but the same thing also happens with the fax programme in trust ... or an internet connection.

When I make a connection .. either sending a fax .. or connecting to the internet or if I receive a fax .. the first time it works perfectly ... and then after that any thing I try to do with the modem ... connection or in/out going faxes
I get an error window with a red bar saying that the TAPI is unaccessibile as the port is still open. (this is a translation from the italian message hope it's ok)

I have tried everything .. closing the programmes everything but the only thing i can do is re.boot ... every time :(
the port will NEVER close after one use .

PLEASE PLEASE does anyone have any suggestions as I can not even use this modem :( ...

I have also now eliminated the internal modem .. physically and its software to avoid any conflict .. but nothing changes :(

Hope you can help ..

Thanks in advance

Seta
