I have an older pc with the intel advanced /ev mobo running on a 133mhz cpu. however without stating the obvious ie get a newer machine i am having trouble installing a 56k intel chip pci modem with win 98. The system hangs on boot-up after the post a computer shop says because its an older machine it will need a hardware modem but before I go and buy one does anyone have any other thoughts on the matter? Its just to be used for surfing the net.

Thanx in anticipation

how much ram do you have? Is there any error message when booting?

Hi Rockerfellerz

The machine has 80mb of ram (Dimm Pairs) and there is no error message it detects the keyboard then hangs even if i install the software some times the machine will get to the Windows 98 screen then it hangs.

Thanx

They may be right about the hardware modem; the software modems rely on the cpu to work( are there any minimum specs for the modem?) 133mhz is not a lot of power.
You could try the modem in a different PCI slot, some times that helps. Did you install the drivers for the modem before inserting the card? I would install the drivers and then replace the card and let windows detect it( hopefully...)
