modem for compaque presario

I have purchased a notebook compaque presario 1200 with windows me. I have downloaded notes 5.05. I have no luck in trying to receive my database from the main server. Keeps telling me unable to establish dialogue. I think I need a different modem than what my computer has installed in it already. Anyone know what I need to enable me to do this? Any idea as to what lotus progrAM would have an updated version of the newest modem? I have 56 k ..HELP
