Modem error 797

Hi there,

I'm having an issue with my dial up, this use to work fine for many months, all the sudden i've this error, is anyone have a fix for this ?

Have you tried System Restore to get back to when it worked?

Modem Error 797 (Help and Support program).

"This connection requires a modem. Try the following:

Close all other programs and try again to establish the connection. Another program might be using the modem or the communication port to which the modem is attached.

Make sure that a modem has been installed on your computer. For more information, see To install a modem.
Make sure that the modem is functioning correctly. For more information, see Troubleshooting modems."

there is an issue with a w32.sober.x@mm worm out there right now and i'm 99% sure you got it. This worm is the cause of your error and it got out about a week 1/2 ago. contact pc safety at 866-727-2338. and yes even if you have norton and mcafee you will still get infected they didn't have the definition loaded.

Basically i lost Device Manager under Start-->Settings--> control Panel--> system ---> Hardware ! when i try to reinstall Modem Software, is there any work around this giving that i've no internet access.

Please advise, thanks

Some general things to try.

See if System Restore will get you back to a restore point before your problem with Explorer.

Try Safe Mode (Do you have this problem in Safe Mode?).

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

If they don't work you could try repairing windows by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.
