modem connection to console produces garbage

I'm a noob trying to get a remote (modem) connection to a mitel sx-200.

I have an pci LT Winmodem, use Procomm Plus to connect, 9600, none, 8, 1, vt100 terminal emulation.

my modem will dial and connect to the remotely located phone switch but instead of the pretty mitel log-in screen, my screen displays a bunch of garbage.

I've tried using hyperterminal with similar results.

Is it my modem initialization string? Is it my terminal emulation? What the heck?
