I'm using Hayes-compatible modems on both ends. When I connect to the remote site and get a login screen, this stuff appears:

++++
ATQ0
ATH

It takes a while before I'm able to log in, and once I"m logged in, I can hardly do any work. Even after typing exit, I don't get disconnected. Instead, I get another loggin screen.

Help is appreciated

Suspect that you are using a non-modem port. Same address but using two separate handlers.
What kind of system, what version of OS, what port are you connecting to?
What gettydefs token? Entry in Devices? Ed Fair

Any advice I give is my best judgement based on my interpretation of the facts you supply.

For dialing out, I use an emulator to connect to my com1 on my NT machine and then issue an "atdt" command to call the remote host. The remote host is OpenServer and I believe it's using either com1 or com2. I've already tried enabling and disabling the ports, reset the modem and the server too.

will be port tty1A or tty2A for modem. I suspect that you have tty1a or tty2a as the enabled ports.
when you do get logged in one time, as root do "who am i" and see the port you are connected to.
Or as an alternate, get to look at /etc/inittab for the respawn for the com1/2 ports. Ed Fair
