When trying to connect to the Internet I get the following message, "Could not detect modem. It may be in use, turned off, or not installed properly."
The system is a Compaq 5304 with Win98 SE. The modem is an Askey 1456vqh-t2. I have just reformatted the hard drive to wipe Windows ME and install Win98 instead.
I have tried the following; uninstalling/reinstalling the drivers, moving the modem to every PCI slot on the motherboard, installing a different modem, changed the tele cable, checked for conflicts, searched for any other device using the same IRQ 11, and of course - rebooting. I have noticed that in Device Manager the only comm port under "Ports" is COM1. The modem is showing COM5 and can't be changed in that dialog box.
