We have a Partner ACS 3.0 with Partner mail VS 5.0. What is happening is, on occasion when someone calls in, the phones ring but when answered no one is there. The caller calls back again and informs us that they got fax or modem tones. I have heard this problem before, but have been unable to resolve it. There is no fax or modem ran thru the switch. I know there is an internal modem in the Partner, but was under the impression you would have to be transferred to it for it to answer. Any Ideas?

Possible theory, the Remote Access PC card? Any thoughts on if this could be casuing it? I have taken it out, so time will tell for sure... Matt Wray

Hmmm, possible, but somewhat unlikely...another scenario- perhaps someone has a laptop? Or...someone is inadvertantly forwarding their extension to the modem (perhaps thinking they are forwarding to voice mail.

If they have an auto-attendant, could there be a selector code pointing to the modem?

In centalized programming, set all lines to no ring (fast flash) on the modem extension...or in system programming, #301, remove c.o. line appearances.

Make sure that the modem did not some how get programmed into the AA hunt group, or any other hunt group for that matter (unless you plan to access the modem thru the AA, of course).

Thank you, Lets see what I can dig up... Matt Wray

Is there a alarm system connected to line 1. If there is then you probaly have a faulty alarm system. The alarm system has a built-in modem for diagnosis and programing. Call your alarm company to fix the problem.I've seen this happen to a few of my customers.

That could be a possibility as well, we do have an alarm. Would it matter if the alarm was crossed on the Bell block before the switch? Matt Wray

Did the alarm installers accidently do their "in and outs" on the voice pair of an extension? I've seen several installations where alarm installers poke around with their butt-sets, find what sounds like a dial tone to them (but is really an extension grabbing dial tone), and wiring it into an RJ-31X. Typically, if a call rings in and is answered after the first ring, then shortly after another call comes in, the modem in the alarm panel is woken up and answers.

No, the Demarc is out in our warehouse and our switch and blocks are inside the office, tied in with a 25 pair... Matt Wray

Generally with alarm circuits, is the modem is setup to answear after a certain sequence, typically, within 4-5 seconds after the first call. So the alarm company will call, hangup, and dial right back- activating the modem.
