Modem and 2.7

I have a US Robotics 33k modem (for paging) hooked up to my E250 through the Serial port. I have connected with tip and added the string. The error I am getting error "Cannot synchronize with Hayes" What is Hayes or what does this type of error come from? Is there a way to test dialing out to outside numbers?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

The Hayes command set is the set of commands used when talking to a odem.(based on the old Hayes brand modems) It sounds like the system is not talking correctly to the modem. You should check the tip setup.
