I am using mod_vhost_alias very successfully, but I've not tried to remove the DocumentRoot directive from the httpd.conf (linux). I am considering this since I don't have a "default" webroot on the server. Only virtual domains/hosts.

Curious if someone here has done this... Does Apache "require" a DocumentRoot to be defined even if it's not going to be used? Am I overthinking this?

Fair enough, but the unanswered question is whether Apache *requires* a DocumentRoot to be defined in the config before it will run....
