mod_perl script failing with ssl

script works just fine without ssl, but when I tried using https, I get 500 error with this error message:

Can't locate object method "request" via package "Apache"

Shouldn't be relevant, but I'm using self-signed certificate. Works fine everywhere else.

I tried changing to absolute addresses with https inside of script, but that made no difference

I also tried turning off mod_gzip and mod_auth_digest but that didn't help
