When applications such as Outlook, Word, Excel, Windows Explorer are open and the minimize button is clicked, the app disappears but does not show in the task bar. Also, when the app is closed with the upper right corner "x", it disappears but seems to remain open.

Any ideas of what is causing this, would be most appreciated. There is no known event that preceded this problem.
Thanks!

KitKat,
Why don't you give us all a break and have a look through the threads.

You may be amazed to hear you are suffering from a virus.

Please feel free to use the search or advanced search facility.

I hope you appreciate me telling you this ;-) .

Regards.

And if you still can't understand that you've got a virus, have a read of this.

You have, almost certainly, been infected with the Win32.Friendgreet.trojan, not a virus as such since you have to sign-up for it, but just as malicious.

The following is taken from the CA Virus Information Centre

The company that produces this mass-mailing application have increased the number of sites that they use for distribution. The following sites have been reported to carry the friendgreetings application:

Users should note that the best way to protect yourself from this kind of aggressive marketing technique is to always read the licence agreement before downloading and running any new software.

To remove this programme from your computer, follow these instructions:

1. Go to the Control Panel
2. Choose 'Add/Remove Programs'
3. Highlight 'Friend Greetings' and click 'remove'
4. Follow any additional instructions as displayed by the uninstall wizard.
5. Highlight 'WinSrv Reg' and click 'remove'
6. Follow any additional instructions as displayed by the uninstall wizard

This is a questionable mass-mailing marketing application that masquerades as an online greeting card. It is not actually a virus, although we have published this description due to public concern and interest.

The application spreads by sending out e-mail which contain a link to a site where the mass-mailing application can be downloaded. The e-mail appears to be directing the user to an online greeting card.

Please tell me if the answer I gave was helpful or a mere bus ride out. Without your feedback I won't know.

I just finished typing up a FAQ on this which I hope will alleviate some of our suffering/the stream of daily inquiries as to this phenomenon.

Hi Phil,
I knew that and still got it wrong.

(I only knew it because I'd seen your previous posts about it).

I think karkarkitkat must be upset about my little pun earlier ;-)

Regards,

John.

Hi carrr,
I think your optimism is misplaced. tee hee.

There are too many people who don't/can't/refuse/ignore etc. etc. the search facility on this site. So they will just keep asking.

It does irks me somewhat, that quality posts are left idling in the archives, to be drowned out by less than quality posts (and I've made a few of those), to such an extent that people like Crustyoldbloke keep having to post the quality answers so that the message gets across.

I think you've both got more patience than me.

BTW Phil, sometimes I am Santa Claus - I will go to the 'enth degree to help out genuine people - with the others I get a little bit frosty.

:)

All the best to you both and you too wolluf.
(Not seen much of the other 2, let's see how long they last ;-) ).

I have to agree with you.

The FAQ will gather dust, more than likely, but...hey, it beats working.

Peace,
Roy

I am just too old and too thick to imagine. Still I do like taking the P*** occasionally. But sometimes, when I feel that I have done something that will be spotted very quickly (like copy and paste the help dialogue from Windows), I get stars instead; it beggars belief.

What I can't understand about this thread is that it was started by Karkarkitkat and he's the one with the star. Is this for starting the thread or what? All computers wait at the same speed....

A star for karkarkitkat about sums up this site (well, at least the 2 corners I visit).

Post's like I made last night thread615-425060 irritate me (lol, and probably others as well). Yet posts such as thread615-421484 show me that there are people out there who deserve a helping hand if I can give it. Still, there are threads like thread602-425421 that show me how 2 dimensionally people think (amongst other thoughts).

The frequency of my posts will diminish, but I will still be about - even if it is just reading the funnies thread602-180224 .

(And so it came to pass, that John became a taker and not a giver)

Kind Regards.

John, you will be sadly missed. Your whit, repartee and what passes for humour in Yorkshire, keeps me going. Did I mention about your knowledge? That really is your forte.

I only answer a couple a day now, and still, it is frustrating.

I reckon this thread will disappear, just like Mulga's last weekend. No valid reason whatsoever.

Keep in touch mate. Here's my e-mail, remove the X from it, there to fool auto harvesters.
