MMC cannot open the file devmgmt.msc 1

Got a bit of a prob trying to get device manager in Xp to open. It keeps saying either

it does not exist
is not an MMC console
was created by a later version of MMC

or

that i do not have sufficient access rights to the file

Any ideas?

I was using the file about 5hrs ago with no probs

Can you get to it through control panel? Control Panel, Performance and maintenance, Administrative tools, computer management - is Device Manager listed? Does Ctrl+Alt+Del still bring up task manager?

It won't let me into computer management either, a message exactly the same appears only the file it cannot open is now compmgmt.msc.

task manager still works normally.

just tried replacing the file with one of my brothers computer, still no luck though

problem solved!

just preformed a system restore and hey presto it now works fine!

not the ideal way to fix it i know but hey it worked!
