MM corporate LAN interfaces

If a customer would like to use the Outlook client to manage voice and fax messages with MM w/MSS, is it preferable to have the corporate LAN interfaces reside in the customer's data network? Or can the corporate LAN interfaces reside in the voice network (separate VLAN) as long as a Layer 3 device is routing between the voice and data network?
