I have a customer who has an MLX-20L as their main console. They had some construction done and the console was disconnected and just now recently reconnected. The console is still on the same port/extension as before, and I'm assuming no programming changes have been made, but now they are unable to put calls on hold, transfer calls from that extension or make calls originating at that extension, but they can receive calls on the phone as normal. When they press the hold or transfer button on the phone, the line goes quiet for a second and then the call is resumed as it was rather than being put on hold on transferring to another extension. Does anyone know if this sounds more like a port issue or a phone issue?

That sounds like a phone issue to me. I would guess that your keypad membrane is bad. It is also possible that crud (dust) from the construction got inside and is screwing up the keypad.

I agree.

You can take 'em apart and try to clean it, but that's a crap shoot at best.

The -20L is harder to open and clean than the other MLX phones. Used, working ones are pretty cheap on eBay and from other reputable sources. You can save a few bucks by getting one without a stand, headset, cords, since you should have all those already.

They are much cheaper to get repaired than it is to buy one that might or might not have a blown keypad from e-bay.

90% of the time the problem is a bad membrane - which is not that difficult to replace. You can try cleaning the membrane connections with denatured 90% alcohol - but this often will not work or only partially solve the problem. While you have it apart you might as well clean the rest of it (buttons, plastic, button holder pad, speaker, etc.). You can buy a new membrane from various sources, such as refurb supplies ( If you are not handy - buy a used phone or get it repaired by a professional refurbisher.

Before you split your phone or buy a new one, try plugging it into the port directly just to make sure the cable didn't get damaged, or even try another phone in its place.
