Hi all

I have received intermittent memory errors which have caused be Novell Server to abend on a ML370 677MHz. The exact error as reported by Compact insight manager is as follows: "Uncorrectable memory Error (System Memory,Memory Module 1)
The first time I got the error I switch the memory around in the slots to see if the error would move with it as we have no spares, but the error continues about once a week in module 1. The memory was recently upgraded in the server and I am not sure if its the new memory or a motherboad fault which is causing the issue.
Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

Maybe slot 1 got hosed.... But if you just put new memory in recently, maybe there are compatibility issues.. Did you buy Compaq RAM or some generic stuff?

What NetWare version and how much RAM before and after the upgrade?

I get this exact message on a DL320 server, although the memory is perfect (and Compaq). I seem to remember it occured immediately after I applied the PSP 7.20 and then removed the HP Management stuff. An error is reported to W2000's Event Log every time it boots, but never after. I have tried all sorts of things to get rid of this error (re-apply PSP, reinstall the Management apps etc) but other than rebuild the server I haven't achieved it yet. It seems to be harmless though as the server works perfectly.

The ML370 works by using DIMM pairs. The memory pairs are as follows:

Pair 1 - Slots 1A & 4A
Pair 2 - Slots 2B & 5B
Pair 3 - Slots 3C & 6C

It may be that one of the DIMMs in Pair 1 could be causing the issue, but not necessarily the DIMM in Slot 1A as it could be the DIMM in Slot 4A causing the issue (if that makes sense).

The memory also has to be the same speed/size across the two slots of a pair (for example, you should not put a 256Mb DIMM into Slot 1A and then a 512Mb DIMM into Slot 4A)

The ML370 only has 4 DIMM slots........ or at least the P3 one (G1?) has. I have a mix and match of DIMM's in a ML370 and it works perfectly and never displays any errors.

Sorry, I was referring to a G2

Hi

Yes the ML370G1 only has 4 slots and have different memory configs in other machines with no problems. We purchased 4 * 1Gb dimm modules (Kingston) for a total of 4Gb and we only had 1Gb before. I am considering rolling back to the old RAM which I know was good and soak testing the new ram in another similar server. Down time is not an option as it is a production Server.
Thanks to all who responded.

You could always have Kingston send you some replacement RAM. But even though they are 'compatible', Compaq doesn't support 3rd party RAM.. It's gotta have the compaq sticker on it for you to know that it's compaq tested and approved. I've even been told that using NON-Compaq RAM can void your warranty (Yours is probably up anyway, but still..)
