When mkvg saw the existing VGDA, it should have asked you for confirmation on continuing. If, as it sounds, it was told to continue, then the data is (effectively) gone.
Once chance might be to remove the drive immediately, so as to prevent any further modification, and contact IBM or a data recovery service to see if they can reconstruct or extract your data. If they can, it likely won't be cheap.
