Hi folks,

This is probably a very simple question but I am a beginner here and the ex-DBA has left the company in a haste and I am on a deep learning curve trying to learn the basic concepts of AIX. I am off to Sys Admin course soon.

I believe there is a need to backup the system structure and I would really appreciate guidelines from you folks.

Am I right in thinking this is the correct steps;

#SMIT
System Storage & Managment
System Backup Manager
Backup System

I will back it onto the 8mm 5GB tape. There is a list of options on the Back Up system menu, can you pls advice me which option I should active or should I just select the tape driver as the backup medium and press return?

How long will it take to run?

Thanking you all in advance

Regards

Katherine

Katherine,

You can stick to the defaults and this will suffice for a system backup - just press f4 over the device and select your 8mm tape drive, if you jsut have one drive attached which will be rmt0. Bear in mind that this will only back up rootvg i.e. the operating system....

It should back up approx. 1gig every 5-10 mins.

To get to the smit screen straight away AIX has what is called fastpaths - in your smit screen if you press F8 it will tell you the command to run to get straight into the menu....
