Another backup question:

Can I run a mksysb -i /dev/rmt0 on the fly in a live enviroment without having all users logged out and all live ingres db's stopped.
Thanks in advance.

Does your database live in rootvg ? If so, you can't use the mksysb to restore the database if it is up when you back it up.

Beyond that, a mksysb can run fine in a normal multi-user mode. There'll be no problems.

Bill.

I would agree with Bill here, done a lot of 24x7 site backups this way (no DB), about the only errors I have encountered with mksysb reporting failure is when some dynamic files (e.g. incoming email) were downloaded to the system and were recorded in the backup image file during initial mksysb startup. Obviously by the time the mksysb got to backing these up according to the list they were long gone (processed), so a "failed" report in smitty didn't bother me much.

What I did was to turn detailed reporting on in the mksysb, so I could scroll through afterwards and see if this was the case, or perhaps something more critical caused it to fail.
