I have an H70 and an R24.
Can I take the mksysb tape from an H70 and install it on the R24 using a boot CD to start the install, where tape density is not a problem?

I don't know -- but I doubt it very much.

If this fails you may end up with an unbootable, very corrupted system.

If you try it ---- make you create a mksysb on the target machine first, and put it to one side, nice and safe... Mike

Email welcome if you're in a hurry or something -- but post in tek-tips as well please, and I will post my reply here as well.

my two cents....
the new machine should come with an os installed? Make sure you have a mksysb
of this new system before you try to dink with it... You can always put it back with the drivers if you ahve to....

Why not merge the user data...........
back up your specific application data..........
and restore only your lvs to the new system...It is cleaner and easier... and safer.

We had a customer do what you say above and it worked as long as all the new drivers for the new H machine and the latest version of AIX and Maintenance level were loaded on the R machine before the mksysb was done....... The only problems we had were with the ethernet cards...it took a fair amount of work to get the data out of the odm and redone...SO make sure you have paper copies of what you have on the old machine if it is going away soon.............
