After installing ML06 onto AIX 4.3.3 my server failed to boot. After trying one or two things I decided that I would have to restore from a mksysb. However, in my ignorance (of mksysb) i failed to create a new size file and therefore the following occurs. stage 1 fails writing to /mnt/usr (filesystem too small) -unfortunately this isnt the last system to be restored. files in / are missing. At this point I get an option to enter the maintenance shell but I have no Idea what I can achive by this. After continuing (in the hope that maxbe all will be ok) I get a second failure, when copying the lv definitions to presumably /usr. The maintenance shell is more use here because /usr is now mounted. However, as /etc is not available I cannot enlarge /usr at this point. Also I cannot seem to continue from this point.

I had a plan, which was to restore the remainder of the data from the mksysb using restore (which alledgedly is possible but so far with no joy (message says "this is not a archive") -but my book says it is!

I honestly don't know what to do from here. I need a mksysb expert because I think recovery is still possible but I'm just running out of ideas.

Some common problems with restoring from a mksysb is that you did not select both drives to restore to and it ran out of room....
Maybe the links will assist you...

Did you have mirroring on when you did the mksysb? That can cause errors like yours if you only selected one disk to put it back on...

Good luck
