We have footage from VX1000 VX2000 (MINI DV) AND SONY TRV120E AND TRV520E DIGITAL 8 CAMCORDERS.

At the end of he day we want to output afile using this mixed footage to DVD or VCD.

I can import all formats into premier (And windows Movie Maker for that matter) using highest resolution AVI as the import setting. Inote that the properties of the AVI files show different fram and audio rates but I can cut and edit clips and play the timeline - all displays fine. I can also export to AVI and it plays fine too. But if I try to export the the VX1000 the clips imported from the digital 8 cameras look like a rake is being passed through them - they are wavy and unusable - I assume it is something to do with the frame rates ... but yet the whole thing works fine in premier timeline and in AVI format - all displays well.

So my questions:

Is AVI the best format to use bearing in mind my end product will likely be a DVD or CDR (I dont want to import everything in only to find the base format is wrong).

Is it possible export these mixed formats back to mini DV tape (they work as an AVI file)? Surely there must be a way?....?

Finally is there a conversion procedure or tool that I should use to convert the Digital8 Clips to Mini DV or vice versa?

tks!

1. Yes, though uncompressed AVI is the best to use (or high end DV AVI ) for editing.
You will want to invest in a good MPEG encoder to render your final mpg stream for authoring to DVD/VCD. Tsunami Mpeg encoder is the best tool for this job.

2. Yes for MINI DV your camera should be able to accept an import from Premiere to put back to DV tape. You can use the Print To Tape function in premiere
